Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Rail Vehicle Shops
BART operates out of several shops throughout the Bay Area. Their operations in Concord, Daly City, and Richmond were in dire need of upgrading. Some shops had no lifts and a bridge crane was utilized to service and maintain rail cars, causing a service backlog and presenting a safety hazard. Shops lacked adequate storage space, making parts storage and retrieval inefficient.
As part of BART’s renovation program, Maintenance Design Group provided specifications and technical support for these four BART shops.
By integrating rail vehicle lifts into the shops, BART’s bridge crane is freed up for other purposes and maintenance/repair of rail cars operates more quickly and safely. By utilizing high-density storage systems for parts, BART is able to maximize use of limited storage space.
• First BART maintenance facility with vehicle hoists.
• Facility remodel was completed while keeping the shop partially operational.
• Parts storage was outfitted with high-density pallet racks and mobile carousels.
