City of Iowa City Public Works Facility Master Plan
Iowa City, Iowa
The City of Iowa City planned to relocate their public works facility in order to accommodate their vehicle fleet and provide more room for public works and transit operations. The site available to Iowa City was extremely challenging. Located on a 100 year flood plain, the site was limited to 14 usable acres and is surrounded by public developments or future neighborhood. Such a site required careful and innovative planning and design to accommodate Iowa City’s needs.
MDG, as part of Planning Team, assisted with site master planning and programming for the new Public Works Facility. The facility will accommodate Administration/Operations, Maintenance, and Vehicle Storage. Roughly 150 public works vehicles, along with 65 transit buses, will be housed on the site. In the Master Planning effort, MDG worked to ensure safety was priority, as well as consolidation, cost savings, and reduction in deadhead miles for the Iowa City staff.
- Departments will be phased into site to accommodate a tight budget.
- MDG conducted comparative analysis of similar facilities to ensure the best design options and innovations for Iowa City.
