City of Raleigh Downtown Remote Operations Facility

The City of Raleigh is a rapidly-growing area, and has outgrown its current operational facilities. All departments were experiencing excessive drive times to work sites throughout the City’s 127-square-mile area due to centralization of facilities. To rectify this problem, the City hired a design team to provide comprehensive programming and planning to inventory, evaluate, and analyze existing facilities, project future needs, and recommend options and a final plan for operational facility needs. The result is a new Downtown Remote Operations Facility.

As part of the team for this project, MDG helped to update the previous program and master plan and develop conceptual site and building plans for the full development of the site. The team then developed Phase I of the project for the Streets Division and Vehicle Fleet Maintenance services, as well as central fuel and wash facilities. Phase II will include new Traffic Engineering, Parks, and Building Maintenance facilities.

The 37-acre site includes numerous natural and man-made challenges such as subgrade industrial pollution, extreme topography, electrical distribution power line, and a site subdivided by major access roads.
