Dulles Rail Yard Maintenance Facility, Phase II

Dulles, Virginia

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) wished to extend their Metrorail system through the Dulles Corridor in Northern Virginia. This extension was to be done in phases,  the first of which added 11.7 miles of new track along with five new Metrorail stations. The second phase extended the track by another 11.4 miles to the northwest, through the Washington Dulles International Airport. MDG joined a design-build team for design of the Phase II of the Metroline extension project to help with the functional planning and design and equipment industrial design of the new rail yard and maintenance facility, located on Dulles Airport property. It includes rail tracks and supporting systems and utilities infrastructure for an ultimate capacity of 228 railcars. Specific components include a service and inspection (S&I) building, yard control tower, transportation and police building, maintenance-of-way (MOW) building, materials warehouse, train wash, and support fleet fueling facilities.
