Houston Metro Light Rail Operations Facility
When Houston Metro constructed its initial 7.5-mile rail, it needed a maintenance facility to house their initial fleet of 15 Light Rail Vehicles (LRV’s) as well as easily accommodate the needs of incremental future fleet growth, up to 52 LRVs. MDG was responsible for programming and conceptual design of the Light Rail Operations Facility and for leading this team of design consultants. The facility provides the space, shop, and yard areas needed to provide the daily maintenance, cleaning, and storage functions required of the LRV fleet. The facility consists of a central control area, an operations area, an eight-bay maintenance area, service area, maintenance-of-way, and facility maintenance shops.
Notable Design Features:
- Designed to accommodate fleet of low-floor LRV’s.
- Vehicle flow between all maintenance and wash bays, vehicle storage lanes, and outbound traffic are designed prevent the need for backwards movement, including Y-connections and a yard with a run-around track. This reduces the time to circulate through the service cycle.
- Good daylighting, light-reflective floors, and building orientation designed to maximize energy efficiency.
