F-35 Maintenance Hangar and AMU
Nellis Air Force Base, NV
The Department of Defense developed a new F-35A aircraft for the US Air Force and other joint defense programs around the world. There were no bases in the US that had a maintenance hangar specifically designed for the F-35A. At Nellis AFB, a maintenance hangar was needed to maintain 24 F-35A aircraft and train military personnel on maintenance procedures. The challenging aspect to this hangar project was that it replaced two existing structures, as well as the requirement that the facility be located between an access road and the building restriction line (BRL) on the airfield. A maintenance hanger with an attached Aircraft Maintenance Unit (AMU) was designed to accommodate six aircraft with hangar doors on both sides of the building. The AMU, which houses the maintenance staff, was designed as a two-story structure that frames both ends of the hangar. Notable Design Features:
- The F-35A Maintenance Hangar/AMU was the first hangar designed specifically for the F-35A.
- Facility sustainable design elements were developed to a LEED Silver standard.
