City of Phoenix West Transit Facility
The City of Phoenix needed to expand its bus transit operating facility capacity and to provide a new contractor-operated facility on the City’s west side. Maintenance Design Group assisted a contractor to successfully win a Design/Build competition by providing bridging document analysis and confirmation, facility master planning, equipment layout, selection and specification, safety signage and functional graphics design, design coordination, and on-site equipment coordination throughout construction.
The West Transit Facility is the most advanced and comprehensive operations and maintenance facility in the Phoenix Valley. Its unique “no-backing up” design makes the facility the first and largest bus operations and maintenance facility with that feature. Comprised of four structures, this state-of-the-art facility also includes administrative office areas, operations support areas, vehicle maintenance, LNG fueling and bus wash, facilities maintenance shops, fully covered bus parking, and employee parking. The dispatch office is located in the corner of the administration/operations building, affording it unprecedented 270-degree views of the bus entrance/exit, as well as the entire bus parking area, covered fuel and service island, and covered parking for all transit and private vehicles.
• First in the nation to use 100 percent drive-through design, resulting in time efficiencies in moving and servicing buses.
• Strategically placed maintenance and administration office module provides unobstructed view of the entire maintenance facility.
• Five PM/inspection bays configured with lower-level work area with mobile work platforms to facilitate safe under-chassis access.
