Regional Transit District D/B Competition Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility

Denver, Colorado

This design was completed as part of a Design/Build Competition for a $7 billion Public Private Partnership (Eagle P3) for the RTD Denver FasTracks commuter rail development. It includes the design, build, finance, and 40 years of operations of a new commuter rail system. The Mountain Transit Partners (MTP) team consisted of a joint venture between HSBC Corporate Bank, transportation manager Veolia, the construction/engineering firm Kiewit/HNTB, and industrial/infrastructure giant Siemens.

HNTB, working under Kiewit, was the prime design engineer for which Maintenance Design Group (MDG) was a consultant. The project included more than 70 miles of commuter rail services from Union Station east to Denver International Airport, and west to the suburb of Arvada. As a project, this was a two-year effort including a design and cost proposal.

MDG led a full design team focused on the Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility. As designed, the facility was 150,000 square feet including an operations center, administration offices, commuter rail maintenance, warehouse, maintenance of way, vehicle wash, substation, and storage yard.

While the MTP team was not selected for the Eagle P3, MDG was contracted by Denver Transit Partners (DTP), the successful P3 team, to conduct a review of the CRMF design criteria and review and comment on the 30% design. MDG participated in numerous meetings with RTD, Fluor, ACI, and Gannett Fleming to incorporate concepts and criteria from RTD’s Elati Light Rail Facility (designed by MDG) as well as MDG’s CRMF concept.
