Saudi Aramco Mechanical Services Shops Department Master Plan

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Aramco, the national oil production company for Saudi Arabia, was facing the challenges in ensuring that its mechanical equipment repair facilities that support the production and refinement of oil were effectively located and efficiently operated. Growth, new production facilities, and aging infrastructure were all concerns for Saudi Aramco in their efforts to ensure that repair assets were properly deployed to meet their needs.

Maintenance Design Group was an integral member of a multi-disciplined planning/design team selected to develop a comprehensive Kingdom-wide master plan for the Mechanical Services Shops Department. The team provided detailed facility evaluations of three main facilities, eight smaller field shop facilities, and several of the contractor operations. The master plan provided a comprehensive operational and facilities plan for reorganization and capital reinvestment in new machine tools and facilities. The team utilized several internal workshops and an intense two-week operation and facilities design charrette to aide in facilitating stakeholder input on the various aspects of the planning.

The MSSD’s field shops repair motors, generators, compressors, turbines, pumps, gearboxes, fans, blowers, valves, and heat exchangers. The resulting master plan included a network of repair assets organized in a hierarchal repair process supported by facilities with the appropriate capacity, capabilities, and staffing. The facilities were located to reduce the overall repair process timeframe and increase reliability in the equipment and the repair process.
