Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) Operations & Maintenance Facility
Santa Rosa, California
A new public Commuter Rail system was proposed for the central valley in Northern California, linking the southern tip of the Marin peninsula with the cities and towns along Highway 101, to the northern limit of Cloverdale. The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) Operations & Maintenance Facility (OMF) is located at the midpoint of the proposed rail system, in Sonoma County.
Maintenance Design Group (MDG) provided specialized planning for the development of the OMF master plan through a series of interactive client/user workshops to ensure consensus of direction. MDG prepared numerous alternative site concepts to find the most efficient arrangement of building/track layouts for the life-cycle cost of operation and movement of vehicles, minimizing reverse motions of vehicles on site.
MDG also provided the program/space-needs criteria for all functions and spaces within the facility. The space-needs criteria established all the specialized functional requirements of each space relative to dimensions, required clearances, material, lighting, and controls. Following that criteria, MDG prepared the functional plans for the facility. The OMF was designed to accommodate both two-train and three-train configurations within the heavy repair, scheduled repair, and service/inspection pit areas. Shop spaces, supporting the train maintenance functions, are located on two levels adjacent to the heavy repair track, with heavy support functions at the track level, and light support functions above. This allows a consolidation of buildable footprint on site, and greater work efficiency for the maintenance staff.
• Stub-end facility design.
• Consolidation of shop spaces immediately adjacent to maintenance track.
• Service and fueling are done in place in the yard.
