Spotsylvania Fleet Maintenance Facility
Spotsylvania, Virginia is a rapidly growing area in central Virginia. The existing, separate school and County maintenance facilities were drastically undersized, and the property was needed for other County purposes. Faced with increasing workloads and fleets of vehicles, the County schools and County departments collaborated to develop a joint fleet maintenance facility.
The new facility was constructed on land owned by the County schools, and
allows many more school buses to be parked at the site, and to be more secure
in line with guidelines from the Transportation Security Administration. The
facility is designed to maintain more than 1,100 vehicles, including school buses,
fire trucks, and light and heavy trucks. With expansion areas incorporated into
the master plan, those numbers could easily double.
Maintenance Design Group led the space planning exercise and guided the
development of maintenance and operational areas. A design charrette allowed
the Spotsylvania staff personnel to examine alternative arrangements for the
site and reach a consensus in a very short period of time. The project’s design
and construction was fast-tracked to meet schedule requirements for the overall
County School’s development program.
- Joint use facility with the County.
- Ability to expand and double the number of vehicles serviced.
