Sun Tran Bus Storage and Maintenance Facility Phase III

Following successful involvement in the space needs program, master planning Phase I and II development, Maintenance Design Group again joined a multi-disciplined design team for Phase III of the Sun Tran operations and maintenance facilities development.

Phase III of the facilities development is designed to support operations and maintenance of the remaining 125 of the 250 buses to be located at this site. These facilities include a new Sun Tran administration building and expansion of the bus maintenance building and service facilities. The bus maintenance expansion includes component rebuild shops, additional parts storage areas, additional running repair bays, major overhaul bays, paint booth bay, body repair bays, tire shop/bay, tire storage, a chassis dynamometer bay, and a second chassis wash bay. As in Phase II, portions of the bus parking areas were designed to be covered to help keep the buses cool during the midday. The final two lanes of the services facilities were completed and the second bus washer was installed.

Project Highlights
• The completed facility provides Sun Tran with one of the most modern bus operations and maintenance facilities in the southwest as well as the ability, as a system, to operate and maintain up to 400 buses efficiently.
• Bus canopies include photovoltaic panels generating electricity for the facility.
• State-of-the-art finishes in the maintenance building designed with surfaces and materials to be durable, cleanable, and sustainable.
• LEED Gold certification.
