West Ox Bus Maintenance Facility
The County of Fairfax operates bus service in Fairfax County and the surrounding areas and in conjunction with WMATA in Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. A new, modern bus operations and maintenance facility was needed to accommodate the unique operational approaches of two separate users – Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and Fairfax County’s “Fairfax Connector” system.
Maintenance Design Group was selected as an integral member of a multi-disciplined design team to develop the space needs program, site master plan, facility functional design, facility needs assessment, project budget development, and equipment selection, specification, and layout services for this project.
The facility was designed to be expanded as the fleet needs for both transit agencies grow. The ultimate build out maintenance facility will feature 26 maintenance bays and a paint and body shop. The administration and operations facilities, also designed for future expansion, provide modern office and operator support areas. This building was sited to minimize the need for bus operators to cross into bus circulation routes as they access the bus storage areas. The service facility (fuel and wash) is located near the maintenance facility, providing for some sharing of facilities due to proximity, yet remote from the entrance to the maintenance bays, avoiding a mix of bus traffic using these different services. Designed for development in two phases, the complex accommodates 150 buses in Phase 1, and 300 buses at the completion of Phase II. The service facility is completely enclosed and includes dedicated day cleaning positions situated between the fuel and wash lanes.
• The facility is designed to ultimately accommodate up to 300 buses.
• The facility includes numerous sustainable design features including natural lighting, lighting controls, and a demonstration green roof.
• The West Ox Facility is one of the few facilities shared by two transit agencies in North America – WMATA and Fairfax Connector.
