DASH Operations and Maintenance Facility Design/Build

Alexandria, Virginia

The City of Alexandria issued a design-build RFP for a new bus operations and maintenance facility for the Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) on a dense urban downtown site. Maintenance Design Group, as part of a design-build team, was awarded this project with a proposal that consolidated all of the administrative, operations, service, and maintenance functions into a single multi-level building. The design included a perimeter security system, climate-controlled administration offices, electronically-controlled access, security monitoring systems throughout the building and grounds, handicap accessibility to all areas, specialized bus maintenance equipment, fluid dispensing and diesel fueling systems and tanks, bus washer with water reclamation system, and money handling systems.

Project Highlights
• Minimized building footprint on site by stacking administration and operations staff areas above bus service areas.
• In lieu of an RFP proposed parking garage, the roof of the bus parking was used for employee parking.
• In-line interior fuel and wash service area design with direct interior vehicle circulation to bus storage and vehicle maintenance.
• LEED Gold Certification.
