City of St. Charles Public Works Facility
St. Charles, Missouri
The five separate divisions of the Public Works Department for the City of St. Charles were previously housed on various sites throughout the City. In order to create a more efficient department, the City decided to consolidate all of the departments into one new facility. Maintenance Design Group (MDG), as part of a design team, participated in the planning, design, and construction of the new facility. The implementation of the new facility consisted of four separate components: Master Planning, Preliminary Design, Final Design, and Construction.
MDG was actively involved in all four stages, including the programming and data collection of the space needs for the facility, and assisting with site and building plans. During the Preliminary Design phase, MDG evaluated the existing facility shop equipment, worked with the City to determine any new shop equipment needs for use in the new facility, and developed an Equipment List, including pricing. During Final Design, MDG provided shop equipment layout drawings and specifications, and provided detail design coordination with the Design Team for the equipment and function of the facility. MDG also provided review of RFI’s and equipment shop drawings for installation of the equipment into the facility and made regular site visits to assist contractor with resolving functional and equipment related issues throughout the construction phase.
The new facility includes an indoor storage area, administrative offices and a training room for staff, a salt dome with a 4,000 ton storage capacity, and additional service bays to maintain 150 trucks, SCAT buses, and various heavy equipment.
• The new consolidated facility allows for greater efficiency and increased productivity.
• Facility was designed to address the department’s current needs as well as accommodate for future growth.
