Summit County Fleet Maintenance and Road & Bridge Facility
Summit County’s old maintenance facility had several inadequacies which impacted the safety and efficiency of the County’s functions including poor ventilation that also affected the office areas, broken floor slab exacerbated by water drainage issues, lack of space for proper maintenance of vehicles, and unsecured, scattered parts storage. Using a design-bid-build process, the County contracted for a new vehicle maintenance facility, wash building, and covered fuel island on an existing County site.
The project team encountered significant time line challenges such as a short mountain construction season, operational need to maintain the road and bridge department’s snow removal function, and the transit operations winter skiing schedule. However, the team succeeded and delivered a new facility that houses fleet maintenance for both road and bridge and transit operations. It is fully ADA compliant and provides sufficient space for efficient inspection and maintenance of the fleet. It also features a consolidated, secure parts room. There are 10 heavy-duty bays, four automotive bays, a fabrication bay, and chassis wash bay. The wash facility is a stand-alone building housing a touchless wash system with water reclamation.
• Sustainable features include a transpired solar wall, use of high-recycled content in exterior materials, super insulated envelope, extensive daylighting, and radiant floor with reflective coating.
• Maintenance facility includes PM inspection bays with a lower-level work area.
• A “used oil” heater provides auxiliary heat to the fabrication bay.
